Roof as Refuge
by David Vanderhoff
Raychel would often open
her bedroom window and just go out on the roof. The first few nights it
happened, our parents discovered that she was gone, thought that she had
run away, and called the police. Eventually Raychel was found on the
roof, looking up at the stars. In this photo from 1986, I caught her
sneaking out for an afternoon stroll and clicked the shot. When she
noticed me taking the picture of her, she burst out laughing.
Thankfully, she got back in before our father noticed what was going on.
