WAKEFIELD:  This is Detective Kevin Wakefield.  For the record it is 3:10 on the morning of August 18, 2000.  The subject is case number 2000-08-18-002.  That is the homicide investigation of Raychel Taurus.  The person being questioned is Geoffrey MacIntyre, who has come in of his own free accord.  Is that the way you would categorize your situation, Mr. MacIntyre?

MACINTYRE:  I would.  Yes.

WAKEFIELD:  Then I would like to thank you for coming in so quickly.  Why are you here anyway?

MACINTYRE:  Excuse me?

WAKEFIELD:  It's a simple question.  Why are you here?

MACINTYRE:  I thought you would want to talk to me.  I thought if it was a case of sooner or later, I would choose sooner.

WAKEFIELD:  Yes, but I think you're missing my point.  The police were called less than three hours ago and informed of a murder.  You show up at the scene of the crime about an hour or so ago and ask to make a statement.  That says a lot to me.  It tells me you cared about the victim, one way or another.  It tells me you have something to tell me.  It tells me you might have expected this to happen.

MACINTYRE:  It's not like that.  It is but it's not.

WAKEFIELD:  Why are you here, Mr. MacIntyre?

MACINTYRE:  I was called.

WAKEFIELD:  I would have remembered calling you.

MACINTYRE:  Not by the police.  By Sharon Wolfe.  She called me from the apartment after it happened.  I think she's being questioned now.  Is she?

WAKEFIELD:  She is.  You were home when she called you?

MACINTYRE:  I was.

WAKEFIELD:  What time was it?

MACINTYRE:  A quarter after one.

WAKEFIELD:  Where do you live?

MACINTYRE:  (ANSWER SUPPRESSED).

WAKEFIELD:  That's, what, a half hour away?

MACINTYRE:  Give or take.

WAKEFIELD:  Impressive.  It must be important.

MACINTYRE:  What?

WAKEFIELD:  What you came to say must be very important to you.

MACINTYRE:  I thought it was important.  What?  No. Not to me.  It just is.  Besides, I came to help Sharon.

WAKEFIELD:  Help her give her statement?

MACINTYRE:  No.  Will you let me think?

WAKEFIELD:  I would prefer you answer my questions.  You shouldn't have to think.  This isn't about you answering questions.  This is about me asking questions and getting information.  The information you provide to me may be useful in finding out who murdered Raychel Taurus.  Regardless, you are a small part of the equation.  Answer my questions.  Do you understand?

MACINTYRE:  I didn't mean to-

WAKEFIELD:  That's not an answer.  Do you understand?

MACINTYRE:  Yes.

WAKEFIELD:  Much better.  Now.  Have you been drinking?

MACINTYRE:  Yes.

WAKEFIELD:  And truthful, too.  Very good.  Did you drive here in your condition?

MACINTYRE:  No.  I had someone drive me.

WAKEFIELD:  Who?

MACINTYRE:  Ken Kincaid.  He works for me.  I thought he did anyway.

WAKEFIELD:  Is he waiting for you?

MACINTYRE:   I think he left.  I didn't expect him to stay.  I came to be with Sharon anyway.  She sounded pretty bad when she called me.

WAKEFIELD:  She isn't much better now.

MACINTYRE:  You saw her?  Is she okay?

WAKEFIELD:  My questions, please.  I believe you'll see her when we're through.  Are you and Sharon close?

MACINTYRE:  We've been dating for the last month or so.

WAKEFIELD:  And how do the two of you know Raychel.

MACINTYRE:  I was producing Raychel's recording sessions.  Some of them.  Sharon is Raychel's bodyguard.

WAKEFIELD:  Raychel was a musician?

MACINTYRE:  A singer.  Kyle McAllister was the musician.  He was also the one who killed her, but I think you already know that.

WAKEFIELD:  There it is.

MACINTYRE:  What?

WAKEFIELD:  That's what you came here to say.  Wanted to make sure we knew who did it?

MACINTYRE:  Sharon said he was confessing when she called.

WAKEFIELD:  Then Sharon was mis-informed.  We haven't spoken with him yet.  He's here, but I'll be speaking with him later.  Right now I'm talking to you.  Where were you tonight?

MACINTYRE:  We were at Safehaven.  It's a bar.

WAKEFIELD:  We?

MACINTYRE:  I was with Sharon.

WAKEFIELD:  Was Sharon drinking?

MACINTYRE:  A little.

WAKEFIELD:  Were you drinking 'a little?'

MACINTYRE:  No.  I was getting (EXPLETIVE DELETED).

WAKEFIELD:  Why?

MACINTYRE:  Because Sharon kept putting them in front of me and I was too angry to think about counting how many drinks I was drinking.

WAKEFIELD:  Why were you angry?

MACINTYRE:  Had an argument at work.  Sharon took me out to get my mind off of it.

WAKEFIELD:  When did you arrive at the bar?

MACINTYRE:  Around 7:30.  Maybe a little after that.

WAKEFIELD:  And you began drinking immediately.

MACINTYRE:  Yes.

WAKEFIELD:  You were drinking the entire time?

MACINTYRE:  I don't remember, exactly.  I think I passed out.

WAKEFIELD:  When did you leave?

MACINTYRE:  I don't remember exactly.

WAKEFIELD:  Did you go straight home?

MACINTYRE:  I don't know.  I think so.

WAKEFIELD:  Think so?

MACINTYRE:  I'm not sure.

WAKEFIELD:  Before Sharon called you, what was the last time that you remember and where were you?

MACINTYRE:  In my bed.  It was 12:23.  I had just hit the bed and I saw the clock.

WAKEFIELD:  Was Sharon with you?

MACINTYRE:  She was the one who put me there.

WAKEFIELD:  Yeah, I know what you mean.  I saw her.  Is that when she left?

MACINTYRE:  I guess so.  She told me she'd be back in a minute and I fell asleep.  Then I got the call from her at 1:15 and she told me Raychel was dead.

WAKEFIELD:  You said that you were producing Raychel's recordings.  Was that the extent of your relationship with Raychel?

MACINTYRE:  Yes.

WAKEFIELD:  Nothing outside the studio?

MACINTYRE:  No.  Kyle McAllister is very protective of her.

WAKEFIELD:  Protective?  That's not a typical term for a killer, is it?

MACINTYRE:  Are you kidding?

WAKEFIELD:  Am I?

MACINTYRE:  You have to be!  Kyle was jealous of everyone who came into contact with Raychel.

WAKEFIELD:  Including you?

MACINTYRE:  Yes, especially me, actually.  Kyle abused Raychel.  Repeatedly.  But she kept taking it.

WAKEFIELD:  Okay, you've waited long enough, go ahead.  Take your shots.

MACINTYRE:  It's not about taking shots.  It's about telling the truth about him.  Kyle McAllister beat Raychel.  That is unquestionable.  He really did a number on her in June.  Stopped the recording process altogether.  She couldn't record because he'd beaten her so badly.  I don't believe you weren't already aware of this.

WAKEFIELD:  We were.  Frankly, I didn't need either you or Sharon Wolfe to tell me what I've already heard from half of the officers at the scene.  They knew the address.  They knew the situation.  Sharon said that Raychel liked to live a dangerous lifestyle.  What do you think?

MACINTYRE:  I don't know if she liked to live it, but she did it.  I think she always had someone beside her that was bad for her.  She though Kyle McAllister was a requirement for success.  She was wrong, but no one could convince her.  I tried, but she wouldn't listen.  Now it's too late.  You're looking at me.  You think I've got an axe to grind with Kyle McAllister.  I do.  I'll admit it.  But I don't need to make stuff up to prove my point against Kyle McAllister.  He killed Raychel.  He has a history of violence against her.  You know that.  He had her all to himself, and he killed her.

WAKEFIELD:  I'm going to get a cup of coffee.  Do you want a cup?

(BREAK)

WAKEFIELD:  So you're dating Raychel's bodyguard?  That's why she wasn't with Raychel tonight.  You know, she isn't saying who paid her to protect Raychel.

MACINTYRE:  She doesn't know.

WAKEFIELD:  That's what she says.  I'm not sure I believe her.  I just think it's an amazing coincidence that the one time she needed protection, her protection was out on a date.

MACINTYRE:  Are you asking me if I was the person who paid for Sharon?

WAKEFIELD:  I was getting around to that, yeah.

MACINTYRE:  I wasn't.

WAKEFIELD:  Because, you know, if it was you, it might look better for you to admit it now.  Especially if both you had an alibi for the evening outside of the two of you.

MACINTYRE:  I didn't hire Sharon.

WAKEFIELD:  Still, the coincidence is really something.

MACINTYRE:  We weren't alone.  We were in a bar.

WAKEFIELD:  Is there anyone that you can think of who can verify your whereabouts?

MACINTYRE:  Laura Douglass.

WAKEFIELD:  The owner of Safehaven?

MACINTYRE:  Yes.  You know her?

WAKEFIELD:  I'm sure I will.

MACINTYRE:  Sharon has already mentioned her, hasn't she?

WAKEFIELD:  Did I ask you if she uses an extra 'S' in her name?

MACINTYRE:  I get it.

WAKEFIELD:  And Sharon Wolfe was with you at Safehaven the entire time?

MACINTYRE:  Yes.

WAKEFIELD:  What about Laura Douglass?

MACINTYRE:  I believe so.  She wasn't at the booth with us the whole time, but I saw her a lot.

WAKEFIELD:  A question about your argument -- the one that brought you and Sharon to Safehaven.  Why didn't you mention that the fight was between you and Kyle McAllister?

MACINTYRE:  We weren't the only people arguing.

WAKEFIELD:  Who else was involved?

MACINTYRE:  Raychel, Sharon, and Ken Kincaid.

WAKEFIELD:  Ken Kincaid.  He was the one who drove you here?

MACINTYRE:  Yes.

WAKEFIELD:  Can you give me his phone number?  I'd like the opportunity to speak with him.

MACINTYRE:  Sure.

WAKEFIELD:  While you're writing that, could you answer me one last thing?

MACINTYRE:  Sure.

WAKEFIELD:  Are those the clothes that you wore yesterday?

MACINTYRE:  These?  No.  I changed.

WAKEFIELD:  Do you still have the clothes you wore yesterday?

MACINTYRE:  Of course.

WAKEFIELD:  If you could let us know when you're ready to leave, I'd appreciate that.

MACINTYRE:  You want to follow me home?

WAKEFIELD:  I could have a unit drive you home if you'd like.  You could give them the clothes.

MACINTYRE:  Sure.  I'll do that.

WAKEFIELD:  Thanks.  And could you let me know if you plan on leaving the county.  It's just a formality.  I hope I don't need to contact you again, but I'd like to have the option, if you don't mind.
